The 7th annual Special Olympics Festival Breakfast, hosted by Kelly Santinin LLP, was held in Ottawa on October 5th. This year, the event committee welcomed over 325 guests, including more than 50 Special Olympics athletes and coaches, in the stunning fourth floor ballroom of Ottawa’s new Convention Center. Mayor Jim Watson, Police Chief Vern White and Senator Jim Munson were escorted with athletes, volunteers and coaches into the room by the Ottawa Police Service Pipe Band. The senator was joined by aspiring Special Olympics athlete Michael Trinque, a graduate of the Friends of the Senate Program who works once a week in Munson’s office as a special assistant. The breakfast included entertainment by musician Paddy Stewart, pictures with a Harley Davidson, a rhythmic gymnastics performance by Special Olympics World Champion Christina Judd Campbell, and a keynote address by Olympic bronze medalist Deidra Dionne. Local Ottawa Athletes and coaches were recognized for their achievements, including Athletes of the Year: Michael Roy and Meagan Michie, Volunteers of the Year: Norm McEwen and Myriam Gay, as well as the McCool Sportsmanship Award, presented to athlete Melanie Heroux. The event raised over 27,000 for Special Olympics Ontario.

Four Corners is a new provincial basketball program that aims to enhance the fitness and ability levels of youth athletes from across the province.
The Four Corners program will serve to provide quality competition to school and community youth athletes with intellectual disabilities across the province and provide a vehicle for continued success for these athletes through advancement to a provincial final competition. This exercise will bring together athletes from the four corners (northern, eastern, southern and western Ontario). Additionally this program will leave an ongoing legacy by fostering competition coordination capacity through partnerships with local community colleges and universities. As well, the creation of ActiveStart and FUNdamentals programming within local community partners, further raising awareness of the opportunities presented by sport for children and youth with intellectually disablities.
