Provincial Awards

It’s time to nominate and select 2018 Special Olympics Ontario Provincial awards winners. We are once again looking for deserving athletes and volunteers in various categories, so please nominate any deserving candidates.

To nominate athletes and volunteers please visit our Provincial Awards Website and submit your nomination on the online forms provided. Please note that the deadline date is Friday, May 18, 2018.

The CAO has extended the deadline for taking their Coaching Athletes with a Disibility eModule for FREE until March 31^st. Volunteers that would like to take this module can visit the CAO website using the following link and request the code to access the course for FREE.

Coaching Athletes with a Disability is a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) eLearning module that provides coaches the knowledge to deliver quality, positive sport experiences for athletes, specifically with behavioural, intellectual, physical, and sensory disabilities.

Coaching Athletes with a Disability NCCP training will provide coaches the ability to:

• Explain the benefits of sport participation for persons with a disability;
• Communicate effectively and respectfully with, and regards to, persons with a disability;
• Design positive, safe, and inclusive sport experiences for persons with a disability; and
• Consider next steps in their professional development related to coaching persons with a disability.

On October 21, 2017, Doug Kreviazuk, Chair of the Ontario Curling Association presented Marian Dupont with the highest Ontario Curling Association award - Honorary Lifetime Achievement award for Marian's contribution to curling.  

Marian was the founder of the Special Olympics City View Curling program in Ottawa in 1998 and has remained a dedicated coaching volunteer since.  Marian will be leading the Special Olympics Ontario, Region 1 Tankard Playdown at the Manotick Curling club on December 2nd.

Marian's red blazer (pictured below) indicates her membership in the Governor General's Curling Club. Marian is the sitting President of the club for 2016-2017. The main focus of The Governor General's Curling Club has been to recognize those who have made a significant contribution to curling, whether it be locally, provincially or nationally, not only as competitive curlers, but also as builders and administrators.  Some of its members are legends of the game.   One of its objectives is to promote the growth of curling in Canada and preserve its history.  

We are very proud to announce that Special Olympics Ontario – Brockville & Area were awarded the Community Excellence Award at the Brockville Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Award of Excellence Gala held on Thursday November 9^th.

The community Excellence Award honors a person, business or organization that:

• Demonstrates a notable contribution to the quality of life in the Brockville community
• Volunteers time and/or financial support to those activities that enrich the community
• Promotes a culture that puts an emphasis on community involvement
• Partners/supports with not-for-profit organizations, charities or other community efforts

On hand to receive the award for Special Olympic Ontario – Brockville & Area were, Community Coordinator, Lynda Cavanagh; Sport Technical Coordinator, Paul McNamee; Council Member at Large Dave Cavanagh; and Community Coach Frank Condron
