Good Luck to Eastern District Athletes & Coaches Competing at Winter World Games in Austria

Mike is excited to go to the World Games in cross-country skiing, and says his greatest accomplishments so far are being able to play sports. When he’s not active, Mike loves to spend time doing jigsaw puzzles. Goal for Austria 2017: “To win a medal.”  KEVIN DOOKS Kevin hails from Ottawa, Ontario and is very excited and proud to be attending his first World Games. Kevin says his greatest accomplishment so far is personal best in the 800m snowshoe race at the Special Olympics Canada 2016 Winter Games in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Special Olympics has helped Kevin become more physically fit, to become more confident and allowed him to travel to places he’s never been before. When he’s not participating in Special Olympics programs, Kevin loves to play on the computer, to read and watch sports. Goal for Austria 2017: “Looking forward to working hard.”  KATIE XU Katie Xu, a figure-skater from Ottawa, Ontario, is thrilled with being named to Team Canada for the first time. Katie, an employee at the Ottawa Public Library, says she loves participating in Special Olympics programs because it allows her to meet new people. When she’s not figure skating, Katie loves to cook, dance and play music. Goal for Austria 2017: “I want to work on jumps, spins, spirals, a donut, turns and have fun.”  JACK FAN Jack Fan, a 10-year veteran of Special Olympics programs is excited to be going to his first World Games. He credits Special Olympics with allowing him to meet new people and to have lots of fun. One of his greatest accomplishments so far was winning a gold medal at the 2015 Canada Games in Prince George, BC. In his spare time, Jack loves to listen to classical music. Goal for Austria 2017: “Have fun!”  RACHEL MATHEWS- Coach Rachel has been a volunteer with Special Olympics Ontario for 19 years coaching athletics, swimming, 5 pin bowling, soccer and snowshoeing as well as various administrative roles. She particularly enjoys helping athletes to realize their athletic abilities and the way that spills over and positively affects other parts of their lives. She was an Associate Snowshoe Coach in South Korea in 2013, the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria will be her second World Games experience. She is looking forward to being part of Team Canada once again and sharing special moments with the team on the world stage. Goal for Austria 2017: To help the athletes train mentally and physically to their full potential so that in Austria they will be able to do their personal best and have as great an experience as possible. |
Ryan's deep bond with Special Olympics

The Senators winger loves what he does -- having professional hockey player on his resume is a dream come true. But through his on-ice successes, it's hard to imagine him cracking any bigger smiles than the wide grins that, one day after his 28th birthday, filled his face on Wednesday afternoon in a gym at Ottawa Police headquarters on Elgin St. Ryan was captaining two teams of Special Olympians against a team of police services competitors. For Ryan, it was two mini games, two wins. For a guy who makes a living playing among the best hockey players in the world, this day meant a lot to him. It wasn't the Stanley Cup he hopes to one day clutch, but it's these kind of things that keep Bobby Ryan's world going around. "There are no words to describe the feeling," said Ryan, who a few moments earlier had been named the honourary ambassador for the Ontario Special Olympics provincial floor hockey championships May 7-10 in Ottawa. "It's thrilling. I can relate, I know what it's like to score goals. To these guys, there are no bigger goals than the ones they're scoring today. You saw the way they celebrated. To be part of it and to watch them share in that joy is incredible." Ryan is a natural spokesman for Special Olympics which is all about heart. Said Ryan: "We scored a big goal out there today and one of the kids said, 'I had a lot to do with that.' He was standing with me 50 feet away. It was fun to see him react like that and enjoy himself. For me to come out and take time away from the two-points-on-the-line-every-night kind of feeling, it's incredibly rewarding. "It's no different than finding a pond and you're the only one on it with a net and a bucket of pucks. It's just one of those feelings; playing hockey with these guys feels that way. It takes you back when hockey didn't mean anything, when you were just out there to have fun." Ryan isn't just blowing smoke. He's had an attachment to Special Olympians since he was a kid playing junior hockey in Owen Sound. "When you're playing junior hockey, a certain number of public appearances are expected of you," said Ryan. "You're 16 and you kind of take it for granted. I started to volunteer a little more. It was always ball hockey or floor hockey in a gym like this. "You don't know the impact it has until you see it and you're part of it. Now, I'm in the NHL, but even then, when I was playing junior hockey, they were happy playing with a guy who played for the Owen Sound Attack. For me to give an hour of my day, to witness the impact of that is one of those feelings you can't describe." His involvement with Special Olympics continued in the NHL when he was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks and he's happy to get another opportunity. "I was hesitant last year, we weren't sure how the circumstances were going to play out," said Ryan, who in October agreed to a seven-year, 50.75-million contract to remain in Ottawa. "Ottawa's home for us for the next seven years. I certainly wanted to be involved. I got to know Chief (Charles) Bordeleau at the Sens Soiree, we sat together. When he asked, it was a very easy event to put my name on and be part of. It's exciting that of all the people he could have asked to get involved that he asked me." 2015 Floor Hockey Provincial Championships Special Olympics Ontario is proud to announce the teams that will be attending the 2015 Special Olympics Ontario Floor Hockey Provincial Championships. The Championships will be held in Ottawa from May 7-9, 2015 and will host over 360 athletes and coaches from across the province. It is a qualifying event for the 2016 National Winter Games which will be held in Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

Sport Specific Conferencing
Recently Special Olympics Ontario introduced Sport Specific Conferencing (see Provincial News Update page 6) Sport Conferencing will promote high quality competition experiences and provide fair and equitable advancement opportunities for athletes. Sport Conferencing also ensures and a more equalized distribution of athletes/teams for each sport across the province Included in this document you will find a breakdown per sport whereby all registered sports programs have been assigned to a designated conference. Each conference will host one Provincial Qualifier. The Provincial Qualifier must be approved by Special Olympics Ontario. Communities are encouraged to host invitational competitions in addition to the Provincial Qualifiers. Communities who host invitational competitions are encouraged to extend their competition invite outside of their own conference. To be eligible for advancement to Provincial Games athletes/teams/coaches must participate in their identified Provincial Qualifier Competition.Quota’s for Provincial Games will be based upon the number of athletes/teams that participated in the Provincial Qualifier in the year preceding the Provincial Games and will be proportionally divided amongst all conferences based on participation numbers at the Provincial Qualifier. Please note that athletes registered in the adapt divisions are not eligible for advancement to Provincial Games and therefore will not be included in the calculations for quota.

Hal Rockburn Provincial Qualifier - Floor Hockey
On Saturday March 22nd, 12 Special Olympic teams from across Ontario competed in a competitive floor hockey tournament at Quinte Secondary School in Belleville Ontario. This tournament, known as the Hal Rockburn Provincial Qualifier, is the stepping stone for these athletes to advance to the next level of competition. Each of the 12 teams played multiple floor hockey games throughout the day in an attempt to earn a position at the provincial championship in May 2015. Teams were divided into four divisions to start the tournament. Divisions included teams close to the same level of competition. The four divisions included the Senators, Leafs, Canadiens, and Jets. Following close games in the morning, teams secured a spot in each of the division finals. After winning their game early in the afternoon, London Blazers came out on top of the Leafs division, just managing to beat their opponents 6-4. After a high scoring game, Lennox and Addington Lightning topped the Jets division with a 10-7 win. The Canadiens division started out a little differently, Guelph tied their first game against the Kingston Kanucks and went on to beat the Peterborough Wolves 4-2 in their final game. One win and a tie allowed them to still take first place in the Canadiens division. Following two great games, Brockville Islanders defeated their opponents and took first place in the Senators division. Special Olympics teams from London, Ottawa, Brockville, Kingston, Napanee, Peterborough, Guelph and Durham all took part in the tournament competing against one another. All athletes brought an extensive amount of competition and sportsmanship onto the playing surface. At the end of the day every team had fun competing. Teams who advance to the next level of competition will compete in the provincial championship in Ottawa in May 2015. |

The competition will feature coach education clinics, sport technical forums and a national competition experience.
